The peanut, also known as the groundnut, goober, or monkey nut, and taxonomically classified as Arachis hypogaea, is a legume crop grown mainly for its edible seeds. It is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics, being important to both small and large commercial producers.
Peanut allergy is one of the most common food allergies. Peanuts are not the same as tree nuts (almonds, cashews, walnuts, etc.), which grow on trees. Peanuts grow underground and are part of a different plant family, the legumes. Other examples oflegumes include beans, peas, lentils and soybeans.
Peanut products are used in a variety of foods; desserts, cakes, confectionery, snacks, and sauces. Not only do peanuts taste good, they are also rich in protein, fat, and various healthy nutrients. Studies show that peanuts may be useful for weight loss, and are linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease.
